Designing the Lagom Tops: Behind the Scenes at Wintergreen

Designing the Lagom Tops: Behind the Scenes at Wintergreen

When I started as a designer at Wintergreen and began learning about product history, it was intriguing to look through old catalogs to understand the collection as a whole and how designs and trends have changed over time. One thing is clear: the unique and delightful Scandinavian woven trim has stood the test of time and continues to remain a treasured part of the Wintergreen style.

A few years ago, I conceptualized a new product opportunity to use this classic Wintergreen trim when I worked as a design intern. After my summer internship, I decided I wanted to purchase a Wintergreen item to commemorate the experience. I was really excited about buying a Hygge because it would be a cozy, warm sweatshirt for the fall and winter, but the one thing I felt would’ve made it completely perfect was some special Wintergreen trim in the design. At the time, the only way to wear the trim was with the Anorak collection, but those jackets were too warm for what I was looking for. I’ve worn my Hygge a lot since then and have absolutely loved it, but I remembered my desire for a midweight fleece sweatshirt that incorporated the classic Wintergreen trim.

Fast forward a couple of years, and I got the chance to pitch my idea for a new Wintergreen garment. The starting vision in designing the Lagom was pulling certain favorite features of the Expedition Fleece Anorak into a more simplified, midweight sweatshirt garment. Something not quite as warm, making it more versatile for more adventure activities all year round. As a camper, hiker, skier, and outdoor adventure enthusiast, I’m always looking for gear that is multi-seasonal and versatile. I want the fleece hoodie that I take on a fall weekend Boundary Waters trip to be the same hoodie I can wear during the weekdays. I want to be able to wear something as a layering piece in the winter and also find use for it on chillier evenings in the summer. The simplicity of this garment makes it more useful in many outdoor activities. Because it’s not over designed for a specific purpose, it can work decently well in more situations.

Versatile warmth to hit the trail or spend a cozy day at home.

The unisex, boxy shape was designed to fit in with the anorak style, not being too tailored or fitted. Bodies come in many shapes and sizes and finding the right fit for as many people of different genders and preferences in a unisex garment was a challenge. After many fittings, we landed on a style and size range that is very straight cut and wearable for the widest range of people possible. This garment can be worn oversized with room for comfort and the sleeves can easily be rolled up to adjust for arm length. After receiving feedback from customers wanting more hoodless tops, we decided to offer both hooded and high collar options to make sure everyone has a style that works for them.

The right material for the project.

Finding a buttery soft fabric that would also be durable was crucial for this garment, which is why we went with Polartec®’s Windpro® fleece. This fabric finds the perfect balance of coziness and durability. It’s got excellent wind resistance and a surprising level of insulation for not being bulky. At the same time, it’s breathable and is water resistant with a DWR coating. We chose colors that are inspired by the northern Minnesota color palette, such as cranberries in bogs, the deep navy sky as the stars come out, and light brown lichen clinging to rocks. The northwoods of Minnesota have a range of vibrant colors and I love finding fabrics and trims that hint back to those details of nature.

Pulling it all together, the Lagom finds just the right balance. As the Swedes say, “not too much, not too little”, or “lagom”. Just right. I hope you find just the right place to wear your Lagom, whether it’s romping through the woods on a backcountry ski, sitting with family and friends around a campfire, or on a day you want to feel extra cozy. It’s been amazing to watch my small idea grow, build, and change over time, with new colors and trims being released. Check out our new butternut gold and sage colors. As always, life’s an adventure, wear it!
